Process of Detox Week 1: Examination

In western culture, life is fast paced. We move from one task to the next, often without time for true rest and very rarely do we stop to examine how this lifestyle is affecting us physically and emotionally until our body crashes and we are forced to take time off work. Often these tasks feel purposeful: the job that supports your family and gives you a sense of fulfilment, the special moments with family and milestones of children, the gym sessions that discharge built up energy and clears your head or the friends that just get you. These are the things that make life meaningful and worth living.

In life, we also choose to take part in unhealthy choices, sometimes they are obligatory and sacrifices we make for our loved ones, othertimes we rush meals and take the quick and easy options of processed foods or fall back into bad habits during times of stress. Making these wrong choices too often can lead to the body feeling sluggish, heavy, tense, dull and unhealthy.

This is often the clearest sign your body cant cope with the unhealthy excess, and often, will crash, forcing you to take rest and examine parts of your life that might need to change so you can come back to the wholeness of yourself.

Being aware of these stressors is the first step to truly healing. You cant fix what you dont see.

Assessing your patterns is the first step

When you take time to really examine your environment and the habits that have formed over the years, often you will see the hidden stressors that have been lurking in the background. The late nights throwing off your circadian clock, the unecessary snacking on foods that damage the body, the self care and cleaning products full of chemicals slowly poisoning you, the toxic people in your life draining your energy and pouring out negativity.

By seeing these patterns gives clarity on how to move forward and become the best version of you.

Self Assessing

You can do all the labs in the world, sometimes these come back “normal” but the true assessment is how you feel. The different parts of your life hold the patterns you quietly ignore, acknowledging these and making small steps to change is the first step.

How do you “feel”?

Do you wake up with energy? Do you work through the day with pain and inflammation? Are your thoughts sharp and your emotions regulated? Now pause, and think about all the little things in life that compound and could be driving that “off feeling”. Do you eat whole foods? Do you limit screen time before bed? Do you use natural products in your home? Are you regularly drinking alcohol? Are you exposed to mold? Have you ever de-wormed? Do you use perfume? - All of these factors, and many more, compound overtime and drive inflammation higher, put strain on the immune system, give you brain fog and muddled thoughts and are the primary drivers of energy depletion, chronic disease and aging.

What do you “think”?

I want you to think about thinking. It is very rare for people to actually think about their thoughts, but these as we know can be toxic for us. Are your thoughts negative? Do you have a voice that says “why me”? Do you think about all the bad things that have happened in your life? Do you blame yourself or others? Now pause, and think about all the positive things in your life. Do you have a family or friends that love and support you? Do you have any hobbies that lift you up and get you excited in the mornings? Do you see the joy in your childrens faces when they see you after a long day at work? Do you think about your dreams and small steps you can take towards making them a reality? Your thoughts are the first step in physical creation, we have to think it before we can build it. When people focus on negative outcomes, they notice more negativity. The opposite is true for positive thinking, we often breed negativity unintentionally because rarely do we stop mid thought and wonder - why am I thinking that way? What is really going on underneath the negative thoughts? Are they just loops and habits waiting to be changed? You would be amazed at the leaps and bounds people can make in their lives just by changing their thought patterns.

What “environment” are you in?

Have you ever looked at your external environment and thought of it as an extension of yourself? Is it calming and enjoyable to be in or is it cluttered and chaotic? Are you surrounded by chemicals and dirty air? Do you have EMF exposure close to your bed? Are you exposed to mold? Are you exposed to LEDs and screens all day? Is your water filtered? Do you have pets that can spread parasites and contribute to extra dirt in your home? Very much like plants, our environment can have a huge impact on our health. Sunlight, nutrients, clean water, fresh air, these are all non negotiables for all life on earth to thrive. Most people spend 80% of their lives indoors and under synthetic lighting breathing in “dead” air, the “indoor generation” is the sickest generation in modern history and its a growing problem. Did you know that children who use screens for more that 2hrs a day lose gray matter in their brain? This should be alarming, but its been normalized. Getting outdoors regularly is increasingly important for our wellbeing. Keeping a clean home environment with natural products, plants indoors for air quality and opening windows and doors, decreasing blue light exposure, drinking clean filtered water and reducing EMFs are simple and often free steps you can make to having a clean environment.

What are your “daily habits”?

Now, take a moment to think about your everyday habits. What is the first thing you do when you wake up? Do you reach for the phone coffee? What about your first meal? Is it processed cereals or omelette? Do you exercise regularly? Do you drink sodas or water and teas? Are there any unhealthy habits you do often like that red wine or beer after work? Do you use perfume or makeup daily? Are you ordering takeaways instead of cooking a simple meal? All of these daily choices have a compounding effect, meaning they stack up over time. Simple changes like stretching and having a lemon water upon waking, or going for a short walk after dinner can have big impacts on your wellbeing. Try essential oils over chemical perfume. Swap the cereal for healthy fats and protein and notice how your energy is sustained throughout the day. Ditch the sodas and notice how the brain fog lifts and inflammation drops. These are all choices we make on a daily basis and identifying the ones you can change will have lasting positive impacts.
